Benches to honour homicide victims unveiled in Brussels

On Wednesday, May 17, Victim Services Huron hosted a public unveiling of three commemorative benches at the Brussels Library. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Huron County Detachment Commander Inspector Jason Younan addressed the crowd of about 60 people, and Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson sent greetings.

 

Victim Service Huron Executive Director, Deborah Logue, gave a moving presentation, as she assured the survivors and families present that they are not alone. 

 

“The remarkable attendance today demonstrates the strength and unity of our community, and it reminds us that we are not alone in our journey of healing and remembrance. Our doors remain open to you, offering a safe haven, a listening ear and unwavering support. Together, we will continue to advocate for justice, healing, and a brighter future,” she said.

 

With the support of the Canada Justice Department and National Victims and Survivors of Crime Week grant, Victim Services Huron secured three benches that have been placed across Huron County to commemorate three homicide incidents in the past five years, which resulted in the loss of five lives, including Doug and Marian Fischer, Laura Wigelsworth, Beverly Stevenson and Darwin Ducharme.

 

“Let these memorial benches serve as a reminder of the resilience and compassion that define our community. May it be a source of comfort for all who seek solace and a testament to our unwavering commitment to stand with survivors,” said Logue.

 

Victim Services Huron is a registered charity that works closely with police, emergency medical services, and social service advocates to ensure members of our community are supported during and immediately after a crisis or traumatic event.
