Brussels Legion crowns Catch the Ace winner
BY JO-ANN MCDONALD
Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year. The Brussels Legion Branch has had a quiet year, being closed for a portion of 2020 and then re-opening with restrictions, but we have persevered and made the best of it. We hope everyone has an enjoyable Christmas and we wish you all the best in 2021.
We finished the year with a “bang” and the final draw of the licence for the Catch the Ace. Friday evening had about 20 folks spaced around the room to witness the event. The weekly winner of $663 was Bonnie Voisin and her envelope choice revealed the two of diamonds, so the search continued for the ace.
Names were drawn and their envelope opened or if their envelope choice had already been opened, the lowest number on the board was selected for them, as per the rules of the licence. The next name drawn was Rachel Hastings and the jack of clubs was revealed, followed by Darryl Smith and the eight of hearts. Next was Kathy Stephenson, who found the two of hearts and then Dianne Dickinson revealed the five of diamonds. Bev Subject found the five of spades and Dan Fritz found the four of hearts. The queen of spades was revealed by Steph Hummel and Martin Thomet revealed the three of hearts. All received a voucher for fish fry dinners in 2021.
Finally, on the 10th name drawn, the ace of spades was found. Congratulations to Dennis Adlington who found the ace in envelope number 29 and won the jackpot of $11,982.00. Dennis is from Ilderton and had been purchasing his tickets from son-in-law Michael McDonald at McDonald Lumber. Dennis was very surprised when contacted on Friday evening and came to the Branch on Saturday to pick up his winning cheque. All the formalities were recorded and a picture was taken with President Jamie Mitchell presenting the cheque.
The Catch the Ace draw began on Nov. 29, 2019 and was suspended in March because of the closure. It resumed in September to run its course of 30 weeks ending last Friday night. A new draw begins on Feb. 5. Tickets will be available at the usual outlets of Brussels Variety, Brussels Pharmacy, McDonald Lumber and the Brussels Legion. A reminder to all that you must be 18 years of age to buy a ticket or win the prize, legal names only on tickets. A maximum of four tickets can be purchased at a time from a retailer and we thank all for supporting the Brussels Legion.
The Branch hosted a family Christmas for the 20 members of the Ross family on Saturday. They enjoyed a turkey/ham dinner and a couple of hours of visiting before leaving. Comrades helping for the dinner included Nanci Ducharme, Judy Lee, Jo-Ann McDonald and Marni Knight. Great job ladies.
