Lions to honour long-time member with golf tournament this August
BY SHAWN LOUGHLIN
The Blyth Lions Club is hoping to host the Charlie Shaw Memorial Golf Tournament this August after having to cancel the event last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last year, the Lions hoped to honour Shaw, a long-time member of the club, with the tournament, which the Lions hope will become an annual event. However, the pandemic turned plans for the tournament upside down and the club postponed the first-ever tournament until 2021.
The tournament will now go ahead on Friday, Aug. 13 at Goderich Sunset Golf Club with proceeds to be split between improvements to the Blyth Lions Park and the District A9 Youth Exchange Camp, which also bears Shaw’s name.
Some changes have been implemented to ensure the tournament can be COVID-19 safe and will be able to move ahead even in the era of the pandemic as long as a provincial lockdown doesn’t force the closure of the golf course.
While the tournament had been set to have a shotgun start, now tee times will be assigned, beginning at 11:30 a.m. that day to ensure separation between groups on the course. There also won’t be a large banquet and sit-down meal with speeches and awards as had been planned. The day will feature a box lunch, according to long-time Lion John Stewart.
It will cost $80 per person to be part of the tournament, which includes 18 holes of golf in a best ball format, a golf cart and a box lunch. The tournament will run with four-person teams with two divisions: a men’s division and a women’s and mixed team division.
The tournament is limited to 80 golfers and registration forms can be downloaded from the Lions Club’s Facebook page. Payment can be made through either cheque or e-transfer.
Shaw passed away in late 2017 in his 92nd year. At the time of his death, Shaw had been an active member of the Lions Club for over 55 years.
He served as an advisor for the village’s Leo Club and a Guiding Lion for several other area clubs during the process of their formation.
Over the course of his time with the Lions, Shaw was named a Helen Keller Fellow, a Melvin Jones Fellow, a Life Member of the Lions Foundation of Canada and a Life Member of Multiple District A Lions.
