Madill soccer team captures WOSSAA silver

The F.E. Madill varsity soccer team earned a silver-place finish at the Western Ontario Secondary School Athletics Association (WOSSAA) tournament late last month.
The squad won the Huron-Perth Championship with a 1-0 win over Stratford Central Secondary School. The team then posted a 1-0 win over Montcalm Secondary School to earn a berth in the finals, then lost 4-1 to Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School, earning the silver medal. “It was a very hard-fought game,” said coach Wayne Smith. “The boys played an excellent game, but the Mother Teresa team played a very disciplined style of game and passed well.”
While Madill has a team encompassing players from every grade, other schools field Junior and Senior squads, making the skill level different for teams from smaller schools, Smith said. “The team has some students in their fifth year on it this year,” Smith said. “When you see them on the field with the Grade 9 students, you can tell there is quite a difference.”
The squad also welcomed three exchange students from Brazil this year, Smith said, which is normal. He said typically the team does have an exchange student join, but to have three, all of whom had a passion for soccer, made a difference. “Their skill level brought the team up,” he said. “They all played well together.”
The team’s month-and-a-half long season is now complete with the silver medal win. Smith said it was an enjoyable season with a good end.
