Silver Stick tournaments postponed until 2021/2022 season
After consultation with numerous minor hockey associations, the Board of Directors of the International Silver Stick Association has postponed all Canadian Regional Qualifying tournaments for the 2020-2021 season until 2021-2022.
A memo from the board indicated that the health and safety of the players, coaches, parents and tournament volunteers was of the utmost importance in the decision.
“Although this is unfortunate news for our Wingham Regional Silver Stick (this year we would be celebrating 35 years of Silver Stick tournaments), we respect the very difficult decision that has been made by the International Silver Stick Board of Directors,” Wingham Regional Atom Tournament Director Jason Goodall said. “We would like to thank all of our sponsors, volunteers, officials, supporting associations (teams) and arena staff for the dedication that has been provided to us in the past and we look forward to continuing in the future.”
In a typical year, 43 regional tournaments and 11 final tournaments are held throughout North America in the Silver Stick program. The tournaments promote citizenship and international goodwill through Silver Stick Hockey.
To help keep registration costs as low as possible, all proceeds from Silver Stick tournaments held in Wingham are directed to the Wingham Minor Hockey Association, with $15,000 being donated in 2019 and approximately $400,000 since the tournament’s inception in 1986.
