CHSS Phoenix Report returns for another school year
By Cal Nesbitt and Cole Greidanus
Central Huron Secondary School’s golf season took place in September and October, with four local golfers earning a spot on the team and competing at the Huron-Perth championship. The team was made up of Austin Calder, Cal Nesbitt, Cole Greidanus and Lincoln Bolinger and was coached by Mr. Bishop.
The golfers put in a strong effort, but, unfortunately, the team was unable to come away with a win at Huron-Perth on Sept. 28. Despite the result, the competition gave the players valuable experience and an opportunity to test their skills against some of the area’s best golfers. It was a beautiful day to play golf in Seaforth.
Individually, Cal Nesbitt shot an outstanding 73, earning him a second place at Huron-Perth and advancing him to the Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (WOSSAA) competition as a solo competitor. Cal faced a difficult day on the course in St. Thomas with challenging conditions, making scoring even tougher. He had to battle through high winds and fast greens, which made every shot and putt more difficult.
Although Cal didn’t have his best day at WOSSAA, making it that far was still an accomplishment. He represented his team and his school and he continued to compete through some of the toughest conditions of the season.
For Cal Nesbitt, Austin Calder, Cole Greidanus, and Lincoln Bolinger, the experience at Huron-Perth was another step in their golf careers. While they didn’t get the result they wanted, the team gained valuable skills that they can carry into future seasons.
And a huge thank you to Mr. Bishop for taking the time to help out with the boy’s golf team.

Grade 9 Week at Central Huron Secondary School (CHSS) was a smashing success again this year, filled with fun activities that introduced the new high schoolers to each other.
On Monday, Sept. 21, the Grade 9 students participated in a tug-of-war competition, followed on Tuesday by a Senior Scavenger Hunt. This is where Grade 9 students ran around the school trying to find senior students. Wednesday was “Bring your own Banana” Day, where banana splits were offered in the cafeteria.
Thursday was the big event: Grade 9 Day, where students participated in outdoor water activities and yard games for the last two periods in the day: soccer-baseball, volleyball and many more. The real star of the show was the giant slip-and-slide.
Lastly, on Friday, students were given a piece of paper to write a letter to their future Grade 12 self. They will open their letters again in their senior year.
All this week would not have been possible without the help of student council members and Ms. Melady. Welcome all new Phoenix families to CHSS!
On Friday, Oct. 2, several CHSS Specialist High Skills Major students attended The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Awards hosted at Queen’s Park in Toronto. In attendance on behalf of CHSS were Hannah Dalton, Isaac Greidanus and Carter Howson.
The students each shared their work and highlights from their hands-on learning in agriculture. The students spoke with a number of dignitaries, including the Duke of Edinburgh, the Governor General, Premier Doug Ford and Minister of Education Paul Calandra. Rumour has it that Hannah got a hug from Louise Arbour and that, as a group, “we owned it!”
Isaac presented a gift of maple syrup to the Duke, who said it was his first time trying it. Well done!

On Monday, Sept. 28, CHSS students walked 2.7 kilometres to raise money for cancer research. CHSS participants sported stickers and tattoos to represent Terry Fox and students were asked to write the names of friends and family who have fought the battle against cancer.
This year, the goal was to raise $3,000. After the donations were counted, we raised $3,770.50, far exceeding the goal. A huge “well done” to Shai-Anna Wheeler, who brought in the most amount of donations for the cause.
Then, after the walk, students headed to the ball diamond to watch the boys’ baseball team play against F.E. Madill, winning by a score of 6-4 in a great game.
