Epic Bicycle Adventure coming to Blyth to benefit new scholarship
BY SHAWN LOUGHLIN
The Face the Storm Scholarship Foundation is now set to host its first-ever event in honour of Blyth native Brittney Peters, who passed away last year after a two-year battle with cancer.
The Face the Storm Epic Bicycle Adventure is scheduled to take place in Blyth on Saturday, June 13 with an Amazing Race-style ride beginning at 11 a.m. for teams of four. The ride will also include a poker rally and a scavenger hunt along the way. Each stop will be sponsored by a different person, business or service club and ask teams to master a new challenge, all in the name of fun and in an effort to raise money for the scholarship, which will honour students within the Avon Maitland District School Board who aim to pursue a post-secondary education in healthcare.
The event builds on the Blyth MS Ride that was founded by Jeff Peters, Brittney’s father, and Shawn Loughlin, both of Blyth, a decade ago. The ride in 2019 included 10 stops in Blyth, Walton and beyond and raised thousands of dollars for the MS Society of Canada.
The ride will conclude in the early afternoon hours, when riders will return to the Blyth and District Community Centre for lunch, served by the Blyth Lions Club, followed by a number of events on the grounds, many of which will be open to everyone in the community.
From 3-6 p.m., the Blyth Kids Club will be hosting one of its signature parties for the young people of the community, including bouncy castles, bubble soccer and other games, as well as, if weather permits, a foam party. There will also be music from Blyth’s Joe Gahan (whether it will be Joe solo or The Lucky Charms has yet to be determined).
The ride’s presenting sponsor, Cowbell Brewing Co., will also host a beer garden at the party, which is open to everyone.
As the day turns into night, there will be an apres party in the arena that will be open to all 19 and older, with tickets available at the door. Another live band will be playing the party, with beer, entertainment and food available as well.
Teams of four are encouraged to register through the Cowbell website and Eventbrite with their team name (costumes encouraged!) by searching “Face the Storm Bicycle Adventure”. Registered cyclists have their meal and apres party tickets included in registration.
