HCPM25: Queen, Princess competitions promise to be interesting this year
QUEENS
At this year’s Huron County Plowing Match, four young women will be vying for the title of Huron County Queen of the Furrow, succeeding Mackenzie Terpstra, who did a fantastic job representing the Huron Plowmen’s Association and its annual plowing match. The winner will also earn the right to represent the county at the 2026 International Plowing Match, which will be held in Bruce County near Walkerton.
Emmy Cronin
The 20-year-old daughter of Amy and Mike Cronin, Emmy is currently attending the University of Guelph, studying Animal Science with the goal of graduating in 2027. She is also working for Clean Field Services this summer and for her family’s farm on an ongoing basis.
In her profile, Cronin said that, growing up on her family’s pork and chicken farm, she has grown passionate for animals and agriculture as an industry. Quickly, she knew that she wanted to pursue a career as a veterinarian.
She adds that she hopes to graduate from the University of Guelph in 2027 and become a large animal veterinarian and, down the road, she hope to own her own pig farm and start a family.
Brook Hendriks
The 23-year-old daughter of Casey and Cathy Hendriks, Brook has been working with Huron Health Systems in Goderich for the last three years.
As for her long-term goals and ambitions, she hopes to continue to expand her beef herd and work to carry on the family farm.
Gracie Hoggarth
At just 19, Gracie, the daughter of Chris and Karen Hoggarth, is currently working for Hydro One.
She hopes to finish her apprenticeship and to continue to learn and grow within the agricultural community.
Queenie Pentland
Queenie Pentland is the 19-year-old daughter of Paul and Rosemary Pentland.
She lives and works on her family’s farm in Nile and she enjoys all things farming. Queenie hopes to join a skilled trade in the future.
PRINCESSES
At this year’s Huron County Plowing Match, six young women are hoping to be the next Huron Plowmen’s Association Princess. The lucky winner will be succeeding Jillian Simpson, who has had a very busy year in the role.
Lillian Beyersbergen-Oakes
Lillian is the daughter of Kerry Beyersbergen and the late Michael Oakes.
This fall, she will be heading into Grade 10 at F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham. She enjoys being outdoors, working on a variety of art projects and hanging out with her friends and her family.
This is now Lillian’s fourth year of putting her name forward in the Princess competition.
Clara deBoer
Clara deBoer is the eldest daughter of Anthony and Katie deBoer. The 16-year-old lives on the family farm just outside of Blyth and she attends Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton.
She enjoys repurposing clothing, playing the guitar and caring for her animals. Clara is engaged in 4-H and is a member of a number of clubs and is always open to taking on roles within the executive, such as president, vice-president or secretary.
Amelia Terpstra
Amelia Terpstra is the 12-year-old daughter of Jason and Michelle Terpstra.
She attends St. Columban Separate School and is going into Grade 7. Looking ahead, she wants to be a hair dresser and enjoys spending time with her friends, drawing and playing soccer.
Casey Bernard
The 17-year-old daughter of Mike and Rachel Bernard, Casey attends F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham.
When she graduates, she hopes to study technology in college or university after taking a fifth year in high school to complete a foreign exchange program.
She is currently working at the Four Winds Barn in Brussels and spends some of her spare time volunteering as a member of the Brussels Leo Club.
Johanna Van Nes
Johanna Van Nes is the 16-year-old daughter of Robert and Andrea Van Nes of Ethel.
This fall, she will be entering Grade 12 at St. Anne’s Secondary School in Clinton.
Johanna has a passion for working on her family farm and she enjoys reading, skiing, volunteering at local events and going on farm tours with her dad.
She has just completed her co-operative education placement at Lavish Salon and is exploring options for her post-secondary education in either farming or hair styling.
Sarah Van Nes
Sarah Van Nes is the 14-year-old daughter of Robert and Andrea Van Nes of Ethel. She will be entering Grade 10 at St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School in Clinton in the fall.
In her spare time, Sarah enjoys skiing, crocheting, sketching, playing piano and reading. Sarah is an eager student at Brussels Karate and sings with the Formosa Children’s Choir.
She enjoys milking cows on her family’s dairy farm and will possibly pursue a future career in agriculture.
