Kenneth “Higgi” Douglas Higgins
Kenneth “Higgi” Douglas Higgins of Brussels passed away suddenly on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025 at the age of 62.
The beloved husband of Kim (McWhirter) Higgins, sharing 35 wonderful years together and married for 31 of them, Ken was the loving father of Kody Higgins, and Taylor Higgins. He was the adored papa of Jack, Leo; Evelyn, Berkley, and Ellianna.
Ken was the dear brother of Deb Oliver and brother-in-law of Isabel White (Len), Tracey and Paul McArter, and Brian White (Cathy) and the cherished son-in-law of Gloria McWhirter and Doug Murray.
He will be fondly remembered by his nephews, Curtis (Michelle), Kane (Jess), Ryan (Taylor), Konrad, and David, niece, Nicole (Catlin), and by his many great nieces and nephews.
Ken was predeceased by his parents, John and Marilyn (Goll) Higgins, brother-in-law John Oliver and father-in-law Elvin McWhirter.
Ken had a deep love for the outdoors, spending countless hours hunting and fishing whenever he could. For many years, he dedicated his time and courage as a volunteer firefighter with the Brussels Fire Department and gave back to his community as a proud member of the Optimist Club.
A true sports enthusiast, he was dedicated to baseball and hockey, proudly refereeing and umpiring for many years. Whether at the arena or the ball field, his booming voice, quick wit, and sense of humour made him a familiar and cherished presence.
Above all, Ken adored his children and grandchildren. They were his greatest joy and meant the world to him. His caring nature, unmistakable laugh, and fondness for a Black Label in hand will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Cremation to take place. A private family service will be held at a later date.
A public celebration of Higgi’s life will be held at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on Friday, Oct. 17 from 3-6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations to an education fund for Ken’s grandchildren - payable to Kim Higgins - Blyth-Brussels Minor Hockey or Brussels Minor Ball in Ken’s memory would be appreciated by the family.
