Lucknow village-wide yard sale brings out the bargain hunters
BY SCOTT STEPHENSON
On Saturday, May 2, Lucknow celebrated the true onset of spring cleaning with its annual Town-Wide Yard Sale. As they do each year, the people once again opened garage doors, organized porches and piled high the front lawns with all the once-prized possessions with which they’d finally decided to part.
This year, the premiere stuff-shifting event of the season rewarded all the determined early birds with a smattering of snow but, as the day wore on, the weather warmed up considerably, much to the delight of both sellers and buyers all over town.
On Town-Wide Yard Sale day, the streets of Lucknow transform into the board of a gently competitive (and gently used!) game of chance. The premise is simple: everything must go.
The game of Town-Wide Yard Sale has the spirit of a choose-your-own-adventure story. Perhaps you’ll strike out with a vague idea of how the day will go, armed with little more than a list in mind of hopeful finds. Perhaps you’ll set out early with an action plan and a detailed map - either way, even the most experienced players will find the day quickly takes on a life of its own.
Every turn down a side street, every driveway you decide to skip, every lingering conversation over a folding table of mis-matched mugs becomes a decision point. And like any good adventure, each choice opens one path while quietly closing another.
Which way to go? That is the question. One directional decision might just define the day. One wonders what wonders might be but one street over. Do you head down Willoughby Street, chasing vintage finds? Or seek out small-sized appliances off the popular path? Do you give up early? Or hunt ‘til the bitter end?
Each and every seasoned yard-saler knows the anxiety of missed opportunity. If you head one way, will you finally find what you’re looking for? Or have you chosen poorly? Was that special something just around a different corner, only to be snapped up by a more savvy shopper?
Do you feel lucky? You might do well to head towards Havelock Street and its surrounding tributaries - a winding stretch of yards well known to reward those practical and persistent. The universe might just conspire to put exactly what you didn’t know you needed right in front of you.
Havelock Street is also home to a baker’s cabal of entrepreneurial kids that tempt passersby with elaborate, limited-edition cupcakes - a worthwhile derailment of even the most grueling shopping schedule.
From there, the map unfolds however you choose to read it. Campbell Street offers storefront bargains and a natural endpoint for those ready to call it a day. But for others, it’s merely a crossroads. Press on to Stauffer Street? Double back toward Ross? Each option carries its own promise - and its own quiet cost.
And that’s the unspoken horror of the Town-Wide Yard Sale - no mere mortal can see it all. One must learn to trust fate and believe that the benevolent forces of the universe can come together to manifest the exact rice cooker for which you’ve been looking. It’s the only way.
Once one builds up a proper bargain-hunter’s hunger, lunch options abound! The annual hot dog barbecue at the Lucknow United Church is a reliable favourite. The question of fried onions becomes, for some, a defining moment. For others, it’s barely a consideration. But, like everything else on Town-Wide Yard Sale day, the choice must be made.
Those who choose hot dogs should be sure to pop inside the church while waiting - just inside the entryway, you’ll find a lady selling just about the best dill pickles you’ll ever try.
Deeper inside, tables are loaded with treasures, near-treasures and bric-a-brac. Timing, again, is everything. Those who linger until the final moments are sometimes rewarded with a peculiar kind of victory: the brief window when unsold items become free for the taking, a last-minute frenzy before everything is packed away for another year.
There will always be one more table, one more driveway, one more perfect find that exists just beyond your chosen path. The limits aren’t just geographical - they’re physical. Bags grow heavy. Arms grow tired. Every car, truck, trailer, horse and buggy reaches its limit. At some point, every adventurer must decide what to carry forward and what to leave behind for the next person.
