Marilyn Jaquelyn (Johnston) Craig
Marilyn Jaquelyn (Johnston) Craig passed away suddenly at Wingham and District Hospital on Thursday, July 17, 2025, surrounded by her family.
Marilyn was 84 years old and had been married for 48 years to the late Don Craig, who predeceased her in 2007.
She is survived by her daughter Deb and Fred Hakkers of Blyth, and sons Doug and Joyce Craig of Newry and Dave Craig of Blyth. She was the loving grandma of Heidi and Kyle Martin of Palmerston, Jon Hakkers and Katie Renwick of Wingham, Jamie Craig and Laura Hoy of Linden, Alberta, and Quinton Hakkers of Blyth, and the doting great-grandma of Austin and Tyler Martin.
She is survived by her sister, Nancy Daer of Wingham, brother and sister in-law Bodie and Ollie Craig of Blyth, and brother-in-law Murray Kane of Fullarton. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Don, her parents Winnie and Charlie Johnston, Don’s parents David and Annie Craig, her sister in-law Joye Craig, brother-in-law Ed Daer, and grandson Frederick Hakkers.
Marilyn worked at Sparling’s Hardware, CIBC and Carol’s Candies, as well as being secretary at Blyth United Church. She also ran Stitches by MJ, a sewing business on Blyth’s main street before retiring to spend more time with Don and her family. She enjoyed volunteering at Blyth United Church helping with meat pies and funerals. She was also a long-time local columnist for The Citizen, relaying the Blyth News to residents for many years.
She was a breast cancer survivor dating back to 2004, had battled to come back from gallbladder surgery gone wrong, which left her having to learn to walk again, M.R.S.A. and a large hernia. M.R.S.A. caused her most recent fight, which caused a cyst on the spine, resulting in her losing her mobility. Thanks to the love and support of the staff of Huronlea Home for the Aged, she was able to regain mobility, allowing her to attend several family events and, on the day before her death, she managed to walk to the dining room with her walker.
The family will receive friends at Blyth United Church on Friday, July 25 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held then at the church on Saturday, July 26 at 2 p.m. Donations in memory of Marilyn may be made to the Blyth United Church, or Activation at Huronlea, Brussels.
