Mary Elizabeth Elliott
Mary Elizabeth Elliott passed away peacefully at Huronview on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, in her 91st year.
Born on July 25, 1935, in Clinton, Mary lived a remarkable life characterized by intelligence, quiet strength, kindness, integrity and unwavering loyalty. She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her close friend (stepdaughter) Anjela McCool, and by her cousin, Fredda (Toby) Rainey (Sloman).
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Joseph Silcock and Susan Sloman; her husband, Neil W. Elliott, whom she married on July 10, 1982, and who passed away unexpectedly in 1993; and her beloved partner of 24 years, Robert (Bob) McCool, who passed away in 2023.
An avid reader and lifelong learner, Mary had an insatiable curiosity about the world. A true bookworm, she found great joy in research and believed that knowledge was one of life’s greatest gifts. Exceptionally intelligent, she possessed a quiet confidence and was admired for her independence, kindness and gentle nature. Always impeccably dressed, Mary carried herself like a true lady, with grace and dignity wherever she went.
For 42 years, Mary served with dedication at National Defence in a role she remained faithfully committed to keeping confidential throughout her life. Her discretion, professionalism and loyalty reflected the character by which she lived.
Mary quietly gave back to her community through many years of volunteer service and support for charitable organizations. She had a special place in her heart for animals and found happiness in helping others without seeking recognition.
One of the great highlights of Mary’s life was marrying Neil. She also treasured the many years she later shared with Bob, enjoying countless scenic drives through the countryside, attending auction sales, and happily travelling along wherever Bob would end up. She appreciated life’s simple pleasures, quiet adventures and the companionship of those she loved.
In keeping with Mary’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. She will be laid to rest beside her husband Neil at Clinton Cemetery during a graveside interment on Saturday, Aug. 1 at 1 p.m. Family and friends are welcome to attend. A private family gathering will follow.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Huronview for the kindness, compassion, dignity and exceptional care they provided to Mary during her time there.
Those wishing to honour Mary’s memory are encouraged to do something she loved: read a good book, learn something new or help someone in need. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Adopt-A-Pet Pet Rescue Lucknow through Kathi Newell, the Sloman School-on-Wheels in Clinton through the Municipality of Central Huron, which holds special family significance as Mary’s Uncle Fred’s car, or to a charity of your choice.
Mary’s greatest legacy was not what she knew, but how quietly and generously she shared her life with others.
