Country Classic brings pro golfers to Seaforth

 

   After celebrating its 10th anniversary last year, the Seaforth Country Classic golf tournament is back this year for the 11th time with a twist on what’s commonly seen at golf tournaments.

   Set for August 2-4, the tournament will consist of two competitions running concurrently on the course. One will feature 36 professional male players competing against one another, while the second will feature 36 professional female players competing against one another.

   The tournament will be under the banner of the Great Lakes Tour and a guaranteed top prize of $7,500 will be paid to both the male and female winners of their respective tournaments.

   With siblings Robyn and Cam Doig both turning professional last year, Carolanne Doig of the Seaforth Golf Course said she really became aware of the lack of opportunities for female golfers in Canada.               Between that and an interview she saw with women’s golf traiblazer Nancy Lopez, Doig felt the time was right for men and women to play together, although not necessarily against one another.

   The tournament will begin on Thursday, August 2 with the annual pro-am tournament. Each team of three members of the public will be matched up with two professionals, one male and one female, for the day, even sitting down to dinner together that night.

   On Friday and Saturday, the professionals will take to the course and play for two days until winners are crowned at the end of play on Sunday.

   The tournament has donated over $110,000 to local charities over the last 10 years and this year’s charity of choice is the Huron Hospice Volunteer Service.
