While the Lulu Tree was first established in June, 2014, the not-for-profit organization founded by Blyth native Emily Wierenga is just beginning to do its most important work yet.

Leo Deitner, right, has been making wooden handles for all sorts of implements for the past 30 years. What makes his special? Well everything is done by hand. Using nothing more than a hand hatchet, a drawknife and some other hand tools, he can take a piece of wood like the one he is holding and turn it into a full sized axe handle like the one held by his wife Rita. In a disposable world, where goods that don t last are often replaced instead of repaired, it s not often a tradesman who specializes in the latter finds success but Leo Deitner says his woodworking business...

Dozens of Mexican firefighters are now fully equipped with clothing and equipment thanks to an initiative started by Blyth’s Doug Scrimgeour, who spends half of his time south of the American border. Above, firefighters can be seen donning suits from the Toronto Fire Department while fighting a fire, while below, the City of Toronto suits make another appearance, this time at a motor vehicle accident. An 18-month labour of love has paid off in a big way for Blyth s Doug Scrimgeour, who conceived, and has now delivered, a program that has literally put clothes on the backs and equipment in the hands of Mexican emergency responders.

While Melville Presbyterian Church’s current building is turning 100 years old this month, the laying of the cornerstone and burying of a time capsule to kick off the build happened just over 101 years ago in May of 1914. Last year, the time capsule was unearthed and opened and it included newspapers, documents, a hymn book and other artifacts. Here, the church’s Clerk of Session Mary Douma shows off the collection. While the presbytery has been around for more than 160 years in Brussels, the building which currently holds Melville Presbyterian Church is turning 100 this year and a celebration is planned at the century-old building this weekend.
